Background
The School of Contemporary Teaching & Learning (SCTL) at St. Lawrence College (SLC) is responsible for faculty training. Their mission is to develop learning materials that are clear, efficient, and easy to understand for their busy faculty.
Objective
I was tasked by the SCTL to design an infographic that would showcase the process of using SLC’s learning management system, Blackboard. The goal was to show its efficiency in completing tasks digitally over paper-based solutions for faculty who don’t use Blackboard to its greatest potential.
Strategy
From Blackboard usage stats, I found that communicating how to create a test with the software would be most beneficial. I wanted to highlight the benefits of automatic grading for faculty who prefer marking by hand. A content hierarchy prioritized the stats to tell a compelling story with data. The mandate was to show how Blackboard is an efficient and growing educational tool for teachers.
Design
The infographic visually communicates data to tell this story. Size and colour contrast draws the user to the most impressive stat—82% of question types are auto-graded. The computer graphic visualizes convenience by grading tests that would otherwise be marked by hand. Type hierarchy uses size, colour, and letter case to ease the viewer into each section in a bite-sized, understandable manner.
Part-to-whole data is appropriately visualized with pie charts. Info design principles guide the number of categories and order of slices. Significant statements are highlighted using type clusters with strong contrast.
Challenges
How to represent this data and how much to show was the most challenging. I had to strike a balance between making the infographic digestible while also demonstrating the benefits of Blackboard. This came through several iterations of the visual design and content. Unnecessary info was removed, and necessary content was kept to achieve this.
